Pop-Up Museum at MHU Celebrates Women’s History Month @ Mars Hill University
Mar 28 @ 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm

A temporary open air exhibit at Mars Hill University will celebrate Women’s History Month. The “pop-up museum” is sponsored by the university’s history and women’s studies programs. It will be located on the upper quadrangle of the campus, adjacent to College Street, and will be open from 12-5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2018. The theme for this pop-up museum is “What Does She Mean?”

“We want the campus community to help us tell the story of strong, influential women in our lives through community artifacts and other items,” said Patrick Cash, coordinator of Mars Hill’s public history program. “People may bring photographs, books, letters, or any other items that they think best represent the influential women in their lives.”

A pop-up museum is a temporary exhibit created by individuals who show up to participate, according to the Pop Up Museum Project at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, which provides resources for people and organizations who want to create their own exhibits. A theme and venue are chosen and then the community is invited to bring objects related to the theme. The project’s resources describe a pop-up museum as “a community show-and-tell.” Each participant writes a label for their object and puts it on display. Pop-up museums usually last for a few hours on one day, and focus on bringing people together in conversation through stories, art, and objects.

For more information about Mars Hill’s pop-up museum, contact Patrick Cash at pcash@mhu.edu or (828) 689-1581.
