MHU’s Theatre Arts Department Presents Little Shop of Horrors

A perennially-popular, award-winning musical, Little Shop of Horrors blends doo-wop, rock, and Motown into a charming and totally-twisted must-see event.

Performances are April 21-24, 2021 at 7:30 p.m., with a rain delay performance April 25 at 7:30 p.m. All performances take place at the Ellen Amphitheater on the campus of Mars Hill University.

Little Shop of Horrors, with music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, and Aladdin) and directed by Dominic Aquilino, marks MHU’s return to live theatre. Featuring a disarmingly funny love story and what is probably the most famous man-eating plant in musical history, Little Shop of Horrors offers hilarious entertainment and a great way to ease back into live theatre safely.

A strange and unusual plant seems like just the thing to save a beleaguered Skid Row flower shop and its hapless employees, Seymour played by Paul Penderman and Audrey played by Emma-Leigh Brookshire. But when that plant, played by Connor Evans, turns out to feed only on blood and is inclined toward world-domination, well… things get a little messy. This deviously-delicious musical will be fun for most of the family. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Performances of Little Shop of Horrors will be presented in the Ellen Amphitheater on the Mars Hill University Campus with socially distancing and extensive health and safety protocols. The Ellen Amphitheater, which seats 150, will be limited to approximately 50% capacity with a maximum of 75 patrons, based on seating configurations of family groups and pods. New procedures including contactless tickets, mask requirements, and other safety protocols are in place to protect patrons, casts, and staff. MHU consulted with several area experts to develop the production plans, which adhere to all CDC and governmental orders. Due to the limited number of patrons allowed in the amphitheater it is recommended to get your tickets in advance.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children, free for Mars Hill University students and staff with identification the day of the performance. For more information visit us at www.sartplays.com, contact the box office at (828) 689-1377 or at boxoffice@mhu.edu.

The next production from out of Mars Hill University will be from the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre. SART will open the summer with The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown. Next is the hit hilarious comedy First Date. Season Tickets go on sale April 1st, 2021 and individual tickets will be on sale April 16th, 2021.
