Mars Hill University will host a concert featuring popular old-time music performers David Holt and the Lightning Bolts on April 7, 2017.

The concert is part of the university’s Presidential Lecture and Performance Series. Showtime is 7:00 p.m. in Moore Auditorium on the university campus. This is a ticketed event: general admission tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door; VIP tickets for preferred seating are $25. David Holt and the Lightning Bolts combine the sounds of guitar, banjo, fiddle, slide guitar, and mandolin, along with rhythm instruments, including hambone (body slapping), spoons, stumpfiddle, rhythm bones, jaw harp, and even paper bag. Along with Holt, the band consists of Laura Boosinger, Josh Goforth, Byron Hedgepeth, and Jeff Hersk.

Holt is a four-time Grammy Award winning musician, storyteller, historian, television host, and entertainer. He is dedicated to performing and preserving traditional American music and stories. Holt plays ten acoustic instruments and has released numerous recordings of traditional mountain music and southern folktales.

The Presidential Lecture and Performance Series complements Mars Hill University’s emphasis on the liberal arts by bringing distinguished and knowledgeable individuals to lecture on a wide range of topics and to provide high quality performances in the cultural arts.

Mars Hill University is a premier private, liberal arts institution offering more than 30 baccalaureate degrees and two graduate degrees (master of education and master of management). Easter Egg Hunt @ Beacon Baptist Church

Beacon Baptist Church of Marshall, NC will be hosting a free community Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday April 15 at 11:00 AM. A free hot dog lunch will be provided along with ice cream and other games.

Ginseng & Goldenseal with Robert Eidus @ Eagle Feather Farm

Come join us to explore goldenseal and ginseng in a forest environment as the plants come up this spring.

We will explore a rich Appalachian hardwood cove where these plants live and see “baby” ginseng. The class will be spent with hands-on training with the newly sprouted plants.

The cultivation of native medicinal plants as a new business opportunity will be mentioned. New marketing strategies and marketing organizations will be highlighted. Current events and programs will be shared.

• Learn the history of American Ginseng and Goldenseal.
• Tips, secrets, and down-and-dirty herbal wisdom will be shared – from the soil to the harvest.
• Identify companion plants and trees.

Robert Eidus is the founder Eagle Feather Organic Farm and one of the teachers at the Southern Appalachian School for Growing Medicinal Plants. He is the author of a number of growing guides and produced a DVD called Growing Goldenseal. Robert has been teaching for over ten years and his classes include informative and exciting new knowledge.
