The cupola, a four-stage polygonal structure, is one of the most impressive courthouse cupolas in North Carolina. The donical roof, bearing clocks on its alternate faces, is capped by a lantern which serves as a pedestal for a statue of Blind Justice.

Madison County Heritage Celebration and Lunsford Festival
First Saturday in October, Mars Hill, NC
Mars Hill College and Town of Mars Hill celebrate the heritage of mountain music and people of Madison County each year in October with the Lunsford Festival. A regional event for 30 years, the festival honors Bascom Lamar Lunsford, a Mars Hill native, who earned the title of "Minstrel of the Appalachians" for his work in collecting thousands of mountain tunes, ballads, stories, and dance steps. The festival brings together traditional crafters and musicians in Mars Hill. Madison County is truly the "home of traditional mountain music". Call (828) 689-9351. See Calendar of Events on this site during fall months.
